MEET THE HEROES
U.S. Marine, Massachusetts
His journey to this to this great achievement was one of great strength and many obstacles. Matthew was born prematurely, and at only 29 weeks spent the first 6 months of his life in the hospital. He was then diagnosed as 96% deaf, and had to learn to read lips until undergoing multiple surgeries that finally corrected his hearing. Even through it all, he carried on with determination, never dwelling on his shortcomings.
Matthew has become a leader, from mentoring younger people to delivering PPE to senior facilities during the pandemic. He has even protected a friend from being bullied. In June, Matthew left his family to become a Marine.
With hardly any contact with his family, and contracting COVID along his path, his unwavering commitment to pursue his calling for his country in nothing short of inspiring.
